- 4-5 small, firm pears, cut into small pieces (I kept the skin on and washed the whole pears really well before cutting). Remove the seeds and the core.
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp oil (I used vegetable)
- ¾ tsp paas puron / panch phoron (a spice mix of equal parts of fenugreek, nigella, mustard, fennel and cumin seeds)
- 1 whole dried red chilli
- 1 whole bay leaf
- salt to taste
- a pinch of sugar
- ½ tsp freshly roasted and ground cumin
- ⅓ tsp turmeric powder
Heat the oil and add the panch phoron, bay leaf and whole red chilli.
When the seeds begin to pop, add the pears and onion.
Add the pinch of sugar and season with salt.
Stir well and cook covered low heat for 6-7 minutes, stirring after every 2 minutes.
Add the turmeric and cumin, and cook, stirring constantly for another 2-3 minutes.
Remove from heat and serve hot as a side dish with rice or rotis / puris.
